Remember that caterpillar we photographed way back in June…

the caterpillar for a peacock butterfly…

well, this is where it is now – or one of its relatives – overwintering in our outdoor chimney

We thought to look this year because last year when we lit the fire we found we had singed a dozen or so sleepy beautiful butterflies. Some seemed to survive the disaster and could fly to find respite elsewhere but we never really knew.

I vowed to block the entrance to the chimney this year and build the butterflies some alternative overwintering habitat, but forgot (of course!) and here they are again!

Fear not, reader! We are using a different chimney to keep us warm this winter.
